Tiny Miracles: A brave beginning for Genevieve and Genesis

In early 2024, Raven faced a high-risk pregnancy and the diagnosis of a rare complication affecting her unborn twin babies, Genevieve and Genesis. Prenatal scans revealed that the cord to Genevieve’s placenta had reverse blood flow, a rare complication known as Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion, or TRAP Sequence. TRAP Sequence occurs when the cardiac system of one twin supplies blood to both twins.

A Fragile Start

Raven was immediately hospitalized in early May for rest and close monitoring of the twins. About a month later, little Genevieve’s heart rate started dropping, so the twins were born via emergency C-section at 28 weeks gestational age.

Genevieve weighed just over one pound at birth, and Genesis weighed just over three pounds. Both infants were eventually transferred to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at UPMC Children’s to receive specialized care.

Compassionate Care for the Whole Family

Raven says the social work team holds a special place in her heart, having guided her through life in the NICU with warmth and unwavering support.

“They are absolutely wonderful people,” Raven shares, her voice full of emotion. “They made sure I didn’t have to worry about anything so I could focus on caring for Genesis and Genevieve.”

Another bright spot for Raven was attending an art therapy group for caregivers in the NICU, which gave her weekly moments of solace, adult companionship, and creative expression during her long hospital stay. In those special sessions, led by specially trained art therapists, Raven found a much-needed reprieve — a chance to recharge so she could be strong for her little ones.

DOUBLE YOUR GIFT TODAY!

Right now, your art therapy donations are doubled! A generous donor will match every gift to the art therapy program at UPMC Children’s, up to $1,000,000. This is your limited-time opportunity to make twice the impact on the lives of kids who are sick or injured.

“It was great to be around other people who understood what I was going through,” she shares earnestly. “And it was great just being around other adults, too!”

For the next several months, each twin faced numerous different procedures and surgeries, mostly due to feeding and gastrointestinal complications arising from their early arrival. The infants needed constant critical care, which meant many stressful and sleepless nights for Raven.

Raven speaks with deep gratitude about the exceptional medical treatment her daughters received and reflects on this period as one of the most profound experiences of her life.

“The doctors and staff in the NICU are amazing and so caring,” she shares. “They kept me informed about everything and put my mind at ease.”

A Bright Future

Genevieve and Genesis are now 7 months old, and they are doing well. Despite the challenges that came with their premature birth, doctors believe the twins will live full, healthy lives. They will be closely monitored during their first few years of life.

As a single mom who has been unable to work for many months, Raven is extremely grateful to the donors who give to the hospital, bolstering the extraordinary level of care the family has received.

“Donors have given us everything,” she says, deeply moved. “From meal vouchers to necessities to covering transportation costs, they have completely supported us, and we are so thankful for it all!
