The daughters of a UPMC Children’s physician are raising money to support research at UPMC Children’s while also empowering young math scholars in the community.
Thrisha and Havisha Kalpatthi are the daughters of Ramasubramanian Kalpatthi, MD, a physician in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at UPMC Children’s. Together, they have raised $10,000 to support neurology research at UPMC Children’s through a math competition series and coaching service.
Empowering Students Across Pittsburgh
Both gifted mathematicians, Thrisha and Havisha have been immersed in competition math since they were children. Noticing a lack of diversity in the world of competition math, the sisters founded an annual competition for more than 200 students between third and eighth grade.
The goal of the Pittsburgh Metro Math Competition is to reach students from diverse backgrounds, experience, and access in Pittsburgh. They also offer weekly Metro Math classes to help students who need extra support.
Supporting Research
The sisters are both interested in pursuing careers in the medical field and recognize the importance of research.
Scientific research has enabled today’s children to survive diseases that were once fatal just half a century ago. With donor support, UPMC Children’s can make the diseases of the past at a faster pace than ever before.
