Expanding Our Vision for the Heart Institute

A rendering of the new UPMC Children's Hosptial Heart Institute

In 2023, UPMC Children’s began construction of an innovative 50,000-square-foot facility to house our nationally ranked Heart Institute. When completed, this new space will enable our world-class physicians and staff in pediatric cardiology to elevate the care they provide to heart patients, like Miller, from birth to adulthood, as well as their families.

In the original project plan, some spaces in the new facility were to be shelled for future growth. However, the hospital’s patient volume has increased by 25 percent since the plan was initially developed. With more patients and families relying on the Heart Institute for life-changing care, this increase necessitates building out these spaces sooner than anticipated.

UPMC Children’s expanded vision for the Heart Institute now includes:

  • a third cardiac catheterization lab
  • a cardiac rehabilitation unit
  • an exercise lab

Alongside its innovative cardiac MRI suite, preoperative and postoperative areas, inviting waiting and reception areas, and outpatient ambulatory clinic, these additional resources and technologies will elevate the quality and comprehensiveness of care for each child and family we serve.

Thanks to the contributions of generous donors, we are currently more than 60% of the way to achieving our fundraising goal. This remarkable progress reflects the care and compassion of our donor community here in Pittsburgh, and it is also a testament to the standard of excellence for which the physicians and staff of the Heart Institute are renowned.

Together, our community is building a future in which every heart patient can not only survive but thrive; a future in which each patient can heal, grow, and live a long, full, impactful life.

The new Heart Institute is a key priority of our comprehensive campaign, This Moment: Put a Child’s Future First. If you are interested in supporting This Moment, donate today to ensure every child has the chance to thrive
