To achieve a brighter future for pediatric healthcare, UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation launched its first ever Legacy Challenge. This groundbreaking initiative not only aims to enhance support for UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh but also encourages donors to share their commitment to including the hospital in their estate plans. Read on the learn how to Legacy Challenge works and why it’s important to tell us when you support UPMC Children’s in your estate plan.
How the Legacy Challenge Works
The Legacy Challenge is a unique fundraising campaign that offers a compelling incentive for donors to document new or increased planned gifts dedicated to supporting UPMC Children’s. When donors let us know about their plans, their planned gift will receive a cash match, equivalent to 10% of the value of their gift, up to $100,000. This matching fund can be directed toward critical areas in the hospital such as clinical care, research, patient experience, or community health, allowing donors to align their contributions with their specific areas of passion and interest.
- Include UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation in your will, trust, or beneficiary designation.
- Tell us about your future gift by returning the “Confidential Statement of Planned Gift” form.
- Trigger an immediate cash match in your name – which you may then direct to one of the following funds: clinical care, research, patient experience, or community health. Each gift is eligible for a match of 10% of the value of the estate gift (up to $100,000 match)

Why the Legacy Challenge Matters
At the heart of this challenge is a desire to bridge the gap between generous donors and the Foundation. Often, we receive significant estate gifts from individuals we have never had the opportunity to meet. Some folks leave generous, transformational gifts to support the hospital, and the foundation misses the chance to express heartfelt gratitude.
The Legacy Challenge seeks to address a common sentiment among donors – the uncertainty of whether they should inform anyone about their estate plans. Many are unaware of the impact their gift can have and the importance of sharing their intentions with the organizations they support.
The challenge aims to encourage individuals to declare their commitment to UPMC Children’s in their estate plans and inspire others who haven’t left UPMC Children’s in their estate plans to consider it. It ensures that donors receive the recognition they deserve, allowing the foundation to express gratitude and ensuring that every gift is utilized as intended. We hope the challenge will inspire those who may not have known about the significance of sharing their intentions to come forward and share the good news.
Furthermore, the challenge allows donors to use their future gift to make an immediate impact. Donors can begin leaving a legacy of generosity and caring during their lifetime, with no additional planning!
Looking Forward to the Program
The Foundation hopes that the Legacy Challenge will spark meaningful conversations within families and with trusted advisors about the impact of legacy giving. By encouraging open dialogue, the Foundation hopes to foster a deeper understanding of what a legacy can truly mean and inspire more individuals to consider philanthropy in their estate planning.
The Legacy Challenge is a testament to the power of collaborative giving and the impact it can have on the future of pediatric healthcare. Through this innovative program, the Foundation not only seeks to secure vital resources for UPMC Children’s but also aims to build lasting relationships with other generous donors.
